How To Stand Out Online

There are millions of dating app users in the United States alone. Use our expert advice to stand out from the online dating crowd.

Did you know the first Sunday in January is the busiest day of the year for dating apps?

The holidays are over and singles are ready to put themselves out there again.

Dating apps can be a fantastic tool for meeting people after your divorce. However, with over 25 million dating app users in the United States alone, it can be hard to stand out.

With all of the profiles online, it’s challenging to not feel like you're just a number. However, you are unique and charming, so why shouldn’t someone know that from your profile?

Here are a few tips to help you stand out from the crowd online:

  1. Use high-quality photos

  2. Wear color in your pictures

  3. Write a catchy & honest bio

  4. Be specific about what you're looking for

  5. Show off your personality

  6. Proofread your profile

Tip #1 - Use high-quality photos
Choose recent (within the last two years), clear photos that accurately represent what you look like. For your main profile picture, don't use a group photo, a picture of you in sunglasses, or a mask.

Tip #2 - Wear color in your pictures
People are swiping within three seconds of seeing a profile. This means you want something to grab the viewers' attention. Red is an excellent color for women. For my male clients I usually suggest going with blue or green.

Tip #3 - Write a catchy & honest bio
Use your bio to give people a sense of who you are and what you're looking for. Be authentic and genuine, but also try to be creative and playful. Bio and prompts are great places to showcase your personality. Remember - this is not the place to write anything negative (i.e. "Don't swipe right if you're into drama.")

Tip #4 - Be specific about what you're looking for
A beautiful part about dating as adults is we're not afraid to ask for what we want. Don't be afraid to ask for what YOU want on your profile. If you're looking for a long-term relationship - say it! This will help attract people who are a good match for you and reduce the number of incompatible matches.

Tip #5 - Show off your personality
Use your profile to give people a sense of your interests, hobbies, and values. Photos and prompts talking about things you're passionate about are great ways for people to 1) get to know a little about you and 2) give the person swiping a conversation starter.

Tip #6 - Proofread your profile
It's important to proofread your dating profile because typos and grammatical errors can be a BIG turn-off to potential matches. It's critical to present yourself in the best light possible. A dating profile with errors can make you come across as careless or someone who doesn't put effort into dating. I can't tell you how many profiles I swiped left on because their grammar was awful.
